"Is it legal to tow a car behind my motorhome using an A-frame?"
This has to be the most frequently asked question here at Towtal after "How much is it?"
We have put together this statement in several European languages which you can print out and then present to the local police should they query your vehicles:
Netherlands
Wij verwijzen naar de in het Verenigd Koninkrijk geldende wettelijke bepalingen ten aanzien van het slepen van een voertuig/aanhanger achter een kampeerwagen.
Indien het is aangekoppeld door middel van een vast sleepframe wordt het aangehangen voertuig voor de wet beschouwd als aanhanger en valt onder de regels met betrekking tot aanhangers. Een aantal EEG-richtlijnen is van toepassing op de regels ten aanzien van aanhangers in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Een voertuig dat wordt gesleept middels een vaste sleepverbinding is gedefinieerd als een stuurbare, meerassige aanhanger.
De aanhanger dient wel zijn te voorzien rode reflecterende driehoeken.
De algemene praktijkovereenkomsten van de EEG stellen dat:
mits een voertuig voldoet aan de verordeningen betreffende Contructie en Gebruik in het land van registratie, geen aanpassingen behoeven te worden aangebracht wanneer het voertuig of de voertuig/aanhanger-combinatie vervolgend tijdelijke wordt ingevoerd in een andere lidstaat.
UK
The vehicle on tow is for our personal use when the motorcaravan is parked on a camp site. It will be taken back to the UK when we have completed our holiday.
May we respectfully inform you of the regulations when towing a car/trailer behind a motorcaravan, in the UK.
When attached with a fixed towing frame the car is considered to be a trailer and is subject to trailer regulations covered by the official.
Construction and Use Regulations. A number of EEC Directives apply to Dutch trailer regulations. A car on tow with a fixed towing device is defined as a steerable multi-axle trailer.
May we ask you to notice the “trailer” is carrying the registration number of the towing vehicle and also red reflective triangles.
The general practice agreements of the EEC state :
“Provided a vehicle complies with the Construction and Use Regulations in its country of registrations no modifications have to be made when the vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination is subsequently temporarily imported into another member country.
France
Le véhicule sur remorquage est pour notre personnel utilise quand le [motorcaravan] est garé sur un camp place. Il sera repris à le Royaume Uni quand nous avons complété notre fête.
Mai qui nous informons respectueusement vous des règlements quand touage une voiture/ caravane derrière un [motorcaravan], dans le Royaume Uni.
Quand attaché encadre avec un touage fixe la voiture est considéréêtre une caravane et est règlements de la caravane sauf a couvert par la Construction officielle et Utilise des Règlements. Cuando ató con un remolque fijo idea se considera ser un remolque el carro y está asunto a regulaciones del remolque cubrió por la Construcción oficial y Usa Regulaciones.
