Custom Build Towbars

If your motorhome was registered before April 2012, you’re not legally required to use a Type Approved Towbar.

What Is a Custom Build Towbar?

If your motorhome was first registered before April 1st, 2012, you’re not required to use a Type Approved Towbar — which means we can design and fabricate a custom-built solution, made specifically for your motorhome.

At TOWtal, we’ve been custom-building towbars for over 20 years, and all work is carried out by our experienced team at our Stoke-on-Trent workshop.

Our custom towbars are:

  • Built around your motorhome’s exact layout and structure

  • Welded and fitted using manufacturer-recommended mounting points

  • Supplied with 7-pin towing electrics as standard (upgradeable if needed)

  • Usually include a full-width bumper bar for extra rear protection

  • Finished in your choice of colour, for a clean, factory-style look

They’re a strong, safe, and flexible solution for older vehicles or complex underbody layouts.

During installation, we may need to work around or relocate components such as:

  • Water tanks

  • Diesel heaters

  • Spare wheel holders or battery boxes

  • Corner steadies

  • Pipework, brackets, or non-standard fixings

We handle every part of the process in-house, ensuring your towbar is professionally built and installed — with minimal disruption and a one-day turnaround in most cases.

Vehicles We Work With

At TOWtal, we’ve built and fitted custom towbars to hundreds of different motorhome makes and models — from compact campervans to large coach-built RVs. Whether your vehicle is based on a standard chassis or something more specialist, we have the experience and flexibility to design a solution that fits safely and performs reliably.

We regularly work with vehicles built on the Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay, VW T5/T6, Mercedes Sprinter, Iveco Daily, and Renault Master chassis, including older models and unusual configurations. We’re also experienced with motorhomes fitted with Al-Ko, Lineppe, Witter, and Sawiko chassis extensions — and as main agents for these systems, we know exactly how to work with or around them. If your setup is non-standard or has previously been modified, that’s no problem either — our custom build process is made for it.
